Expiry and beyond-use dating: FAQ
How is the expiry date calculated?
The calculator adds the shelf life in whole months to the manufacture date, handling short months and leap years. So a product made on 31 January with a 1-month shelf life expires on 28 (or 29) February.
What is a beyond-use date (BUD) and how is it different from expiry?
The expiry date applies to the product in its original, unopened container. Once you repackage, reconstitute, or compound it, a shorter beyond-use date applies. Switch on the beyond-use option: the tool assigns the earlier of the manufacturer expiry and your repackage date plus the BUD limit.
What BUD limit should I use?
That comes from your own SOP and the applicable USP or pharmacopoeia rules for the dosage form. This tool does the date arithmetic; it does not set the clinical limit for you. The assigned date never exceeds the original expiry.
What does FEFO mean?
First Expiry, First Out. In batch mode, paste all your lots and the tool orders them by soonest expiry so the stock that expires first is dispatched first, which is the expectation under PPB Good Distribution Practice.
When should a Kenyan registration renewal start?
PPB product registrations run for 5 years. Start the renewal cycle about 6 months before expiry to avoid a market gap. Use the reminder button to add a calendar alert, or see our renewal and variations service.
How do I calculate expiry date from manufacturing date?
Enter the manufacturing date and the shelf life in months, then calculate. The tool adds the shelf life to the manufacturing date and returns the expiry date, total days, and a clean formatted output you can copy onto a label or batch record.
Does this work as a medicine expiry and shelf-life calculator in months?
Yes. This is a manufacturing date and expiry date calculator that doubles as a shelf-life calculator in months. As a pharmacist-led tool, it suits medicines, devices, and other regulated stock managed under PPB rules in Kenya, computing the expiry directly from the manufacturing date.
Can it work as a best before date calculator?
Yes. Enter the manufacturing date and the best before period in months and the tool returns the best before or expiry date. For an opened, repackaged, or compounded item, switch on the beyond-use option to apply a shorter assigned date.
How do I convert a manufacturing date to an expiry date for a whole batch?
Use batch mode to paste many lots at once, each with its manufacturing date and shelf life in months. The tool converts every manufacturing date to an expiry date and orders the lots by soonest expiry so first-expiry stock moves first.
Disclaimer: This tool calculates dates from standard calendar months. Always refer to manufacturer specifications, stability data, and your approved SOPs for the final expiry or beyond-use determination.
